Not a film for everyone. But if you have read Patrick White's brilliant novel about a narcissistic elderly dying woman and her impact on those around her (as I have done), you will appreciate this beautiful careful and subtle rendering of the novel. Magnificent acting and wonderful moments of psychological insight. I was rivited.

I used to think that Geoffrey Rush was one of the best actors working today. He may be but he betrayed woeful judgement in getting involved with this stinker. It looks as if the producers bought the film rights then shot the various scenes on location in a convenient sequence. They then attempted to weld them together to make some kind of story, became bored with the project and just sent the movie off as it was. Don't go near it.

For a dramatic piece of work, it was certainly quite dramatic! What was supposed to be a movie about family ties turned out to be quite a boring piece of work. I wouldn't recommend it to a young audience unless they have read the book beforehand and enjoyed the storyline.
